Summer Youth Seminar – Video Game Design

Purpose of class

  • To introduce technical and art skills of how to develop a video game.
  • To generate interest of coding and digital arts of game design in the STEM area for young age group of students.
  • To support the STEM education development of the non-profit organization Little Masters Club and STEM education development in local community.

Class, participants and curriculum:

  • Class setting: Video conference via Zoom (due to COVID-19) teaching setting with lecture, project and presentation combined. Coding language is C# and software are Unity & Autodesk Sketchbook.
  • Teacher student ratio: under 1:6
  • Class arrangement: will be arranged in three different levels of classes including Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced.
  • Length of class for each level: Two hours/class, two classes in total. First class offered from 2pm to 4pm on June 23 and June 25. Additional classes to follow.
  • Curriculum: Game design principle, game design software learning, individual project guidance and presentation.
  • Class is open to students aged 11-14 who are truly interested in video game design. Not accepting students who are pushed by parents to come and need forced feeding. Basic knowledge of coding is recommended but not required.

Class registration process:

  • Registration will be done online. A simple questionnaire will need to be filled by students and parents who are interested in the class so that class can be grouped by similar age and interest level of students.

Teacher credential:

  • Teacher is a 11-grade high school student who won Scholastic Arts award in video game development.
  • Teacher is knowledgeable in video game programming and digital arts software such as Unity, Photoshop, Autodesk Sketchbook, etc.
  • Teacher has teaching experiences teaching video game class and robotics programming and engineering class to age group from 10 -13 students who are interested in STEM and has earned positive feedback from parents.

Time: 6/23(Tue) 2pm – 4pm, 6/25(Thur) 2pm – 4pm

Class fee: $12/hour ($48 for four-hour class), 80% of all proceeding will go to Little Masters Club and 20% for class preparation materials.
